Responsibilities:

The Senior Plastics Engineer is responsible for managing projects designed to continuously improve injection molding processes and equipment required to achieve corporate manufacturing and quality objectives.  Focus will initially be on the justification, selection and installation of capital equipment required to meet increased production.  Long term focus will be on the development and implementation of systems to ensure the efficient transfer, process verification and validation of new products into production and the implementation of lean manufacturing techniques to control costs and improve productivity.  Other duties will include:

 

  • Early involvement and participation in the design and development of new products to ensure Design for Manufacturability, cost control, and quality.
  • Selection and supervision of outside tooling vendors providing new/revised tools and overseeing the validation, documentation and optimization of new product launch operations.
  • Assist in the selection and testing of plastic/polymer materials.
  • Direct and monitor day to day injection molding and related operations to provide technical support and problem solving to ensure optimal process and quality.
  • Manage the development and implementation of capital equipment projects and the automation of high volume injection molding and secondary operations.
  • Will attend industry trade shows, develop vendor relationships, and stay abreast of technologies, manufacturing concepts, and methods that may benefit the company by increasing productivity and reducing costs.
  • Perform cost analyses to make comparative studies to determine the most cost effective solutions and justify production of components in-house or transfer to outside vendors.

 

Requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Plastics, Polymer, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 8 to 10 years of experience in Injection Molding of high volume, precision plastic components.  That experience must include at least 3 to 5 years of experience working in the molding of plastic Medical Device products.
  • Specific knowledge and demonstrated skills in Medical Device molding, materials, and tooling validation procedures and compliance to all FDA and ISO requirements.  (Class I and Class II medical products, ISO 13485, etc.)
  • Strong technical knowledge of injection molding processes including training and experience in RJG or other Scientific Molding techniques, CAD skills, and knowledge of advanced lean manufacturing techniques including SPC, 6 sigma, etc.
  • Substantial experience in highly automated, lights out production of disposable plastic medical devices in strongly desired.
